hello A GREAT WILDERNESS @ THE BECK CENTER FOR THE ARTS - hub

Through April 9, 2017

Bob Abelman

Two hours of angst, with intermission.

A Great Wilderness” is a thought-provoking script that gets an excellent production.  Don’t be surprised if you find yourself involved in a lengthy discussion regarding the meaning of the play’s conclusion and have lots of self-thoughts about the play and its implications.

No matter what your views concerning the subject matter, this is a thinking person’s play that will open up dialogue for the trip home and for days after. It is a controversial subject with religious overtones that brings a lot of emotion to the surface. Share it with someone you trust and be prepared to discuss the work (especially the ending) at length.

These adult characters are playing tennis without an opponent. They all essentially agree with each other regarding the benefits of curing gay men and, as they keep lobbing or slamming their arguments over the net, there is no one on the other side to return serve.

Can two weeks at a mountain cabin and an understanding adult “turn” a gay teen straight? That’s not the only question the ambitious A Great Wilderness poses at this latest Beck Center’s production. Author Samuel D. Hunter has provided director Scott Spence and the six-member cast a play that toys with the “what ifs” of life, but provides no pat answers.

hello BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL @ THE BECK CENTER - hub

February 10 through 26, 2017
(216) 521-2540

Bob Abelman

Beck’s ‘Bring It On’ offers cheer-face and style over substance.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's blog here.

Roy Berko

Bring It On: The Musical is not a great script, but with a talented cast, high energy dancing, creative choreography, compelling gymnastics, and a dynamic musical score, Beck appears to have another cash cow on its hands as large audiences should fill up the theatre.

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Kerry Clawson

The musical 'Bring It On' smartly manages to poke tongue-and-cheek fun at the cheerleading world while at the same time celebrating the spirit of competition and friendship.

Mark Horning

For fans of The Beck Center and BWU’s Musical Arts Program this production of Bring It On- The Musical will continue to fill the theater with sell-out crowds due mainly to the performance level of the cast and crew and in spite of the weak script and non-memorable music. Get your ticket early to avoid missing this well performed show.

Your interest in cheerleading competitions may be minimal, or nonexistent, but this effusive production will have you standing and applauding at the final curtain.

Wow, was I wrong! (That happens once in awhile, hahaha.) Bring it On the Musical, a rock/hip hop show now playing in regional premiere at the Beck Center, turned out to be quite surprising. I had assumed I’d see a fluffy musical based on a film about high school cheerleading competitions — a great subject to showcase dance, but not one too intellectually or emotionally “deep.”

Andrea Simakis

The production only really comes alive when we leave the sanitized environs of Campbell's old school and hear Miranda's thrilling voice in the thumping rhythms and clever, loquacious lyrics echoing through the halls of Jackson High.  Choreographer Martin Cespedes gives us the pelvic-centered, bum-shuddering moves you'd expect, but also taps a sinuous street dancer's grace, particularly in "Do Your Own Thing."

The Little Mermaid is a total delight and absolutely a  must see for anyone who likes well-performed and conceived fantasy musicals.   What a wonderful evening of theatre for audiences of all ages.

If you are looking for a break from the candy cane infused holiday fare but still want to see something suitable for a young family this is the show to see. The lavish set, costumes and video projections create a magical undersea world that when combined with the excellent voice and choreography makes for a wonderful evening of solid entertainment.

hello BODY AWARENESS - hub

BODY AWARENESS
Beck Center for the Arts
October 7-Novemer 6, 2016

Bob Abelman

‘Body Awareness’ at Beck so low key it unlocks little.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's CJN article here.

Roy Berko

Beck’s ninety-minute intermissionless BODY AWARENESS has some high points, but doesn’t showcase the requisite humor built into the script.   Though not a great play, it appears that author Annie Baker learned from writing this, her initial script, and has gone on to expand her voice as evidenced by her receipt of a Pulitzer Prize for a later work.

This is a show that needs to be performed with crisp timing, not with the casual and indulgent pacing that director Vegh has employed. And that’s too bad, because the Beck cast is clearly capable of much more.

hello RUTHLESS @ THE BECK CENTER FOR THE ARTS - hub

September 16 through October 126, 2016
(216) 521-2540

Bob Abelman

Beck Center’s ‘Ruthless!’ goes for broke, which pays dividends.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's CJN article here.

Roy Berko

Ruthless! will delight many. It is a fun farce.  This production gets it almost right.  With a little more letting loose and playing for laughs, it could have been great.

Howard Gollop

(The cast is) uniformly spectacular. ... As for the Beck production itself, the direction and stage design could be a bit more strident, arch and over-the-top to match the material. But it’s still a thrill to see this rarely done 24-year-old intimate show (with lots of new witty topical references) in near-perfect condition.

Mark Horning

If your brand of entertainment runs to outrageous musical spoofs then this is a must see show for you.  The dialog is rapid fire, the jokes broad and frequent and enough surprises to keep you guessing.  This would be a great guy or gal’s night out.  Come fill the seats.

This over-the-top exercise, featuring book and lyrics by Joel Paley and music by Marvin Laird, happily slaps together references from iconic shows ranging from Mame to All About Eve, and never stops for a moment to catch its breath.

hello BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL @ THE BECK CENTER - hub

July 8 through August 14, 2016
(216) 521-2540

Bob Abelman

Beck’s ‘Billy Elliot’ lands the grand jeté but falls short of expectations.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's CJN article here.

As evidenced by the many bursts of applause following dance numbers and vocal solos, in spite of some questionable conceptual and execution aspects, audiences should appreciate the production.  Praise to Martin Céspedes for his choreographic concepts.

Howard Gollup

One, of course, is the young man in the title role — Seth Judice, a singing, dancing pre-teen powerhouse who grasps his character in dialogue, song and dance.
The other is Martin Cespedes, a frequent choreographer at Beck Center and other local professional stages. Known for his ability to squeeze every bit of Broadway pizzazz out of any show and its cast, he has ascended ably into the majestic realm of interpretive ballet.

Mark Horning

At times brilliant, at times not so, the show fortunately balances out slightly more on the plus than minus.  Some of the technical problems are solvable while those disconnects with the audience may take some additional work to overcome.

The choreography and direction of this production have some intriguing departures from the touring production in Cleveland  a few years ago. The dynamic cast fill the Beck Center Stage with the emotional power of miners on strike and a child dancer who overcomes odds to feed his passion. The loud production also pulls off intimate moments thanks to the skilled leads.

hello SHINING CITY @ BECK CENTER - hub

April 1 through May 1, 2016
216-521-2540

Bob Abelman

Beck Center’s yarn inspires a yawn.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's CJN article here.

Roy Berko

SHINING CITY is a well-written script which tells a compelling set of stories.  Past productions of the play were praised for their emotional development and wit.  Though the Beck production had some excellent performances, the pace, staging and some shallow character connections, left some of the over-all effect missing.  Hopefully, as the show runs, the performers will add some of the missing or muted elements.

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Mark Horning

Shining City is a show of subtle nuances where close attention to stance and inflection are needed to understand the purpose of the plot.  The opening night production was one of those rare instances when the show surpassed the reach of local theater and went into the realm of Broadway worthy.  The writing is smart and concise and the acting (under the direction of Bernadette Clemens) well balanced.  This is a great date night debate show to see.

To see a full review of this show, read Mark Horning's blog.

Christine Howey

It’s a fascinating construct in theory, but at the opening Saturday performance the balance was ever so slightly off-kilter, turning McPherson’s naturalistic dialogue into a procession of truncated affectations and half-finished thoughts.

hello IN THE HEIGHTS @ BECK CENTER FOR THE ARTS - hub

February 12 through 28, 2016
216-521-2540

Bob Abelman

‘In the Heights’ es increíble -- caliente, liviano y dulce -- pero no auténtico.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's CJN article here.

Roy Berko

The multi-Tony winning IN THE HEIGHTS gets an exciting and well-developed production through creative direction by Victoria Bussert and fine acting, singing and dancing by a cast mainly composed of Baldwin Wallace University past and present students.  If you like Latino music enfolded into a nicely developed story, this should be on your “go to” list.

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Kerry Clawson

It may be impossible to get tickets to the hip-hop phenomenon Hamilton on Broadway, but Northeast Ohio audiences can still see the next best thing right up the road at Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood: Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical IN THE HEIGHTS.

At Beck Center, the Baldwin Wallace University musical theater program is co-producing the vibrant show, which features 23 BW students and two alumni Equity actors. The show, directed by Victoria Bussert, pops with hot salsa and hip-hop choreography by Gregory Daniels and excellent vocals.

An extremely talented cast and crew works a great blend of hip-hop and salsa music that is combined with an engaging plot for an excellent evening of musical theater.  If a solution can be found to solve the balance of orchestra and singers it will make for a nearly perfect performance.

Once again, the combined resources of The Beck Center and the Musical Theater Program at Baldwin-Wallace University make a theatrical product greater than the sum of the parts. All the dynamics of "In the Heights" appeal to young people, giving this production a special energy that overcomes the casting with no regard to age.

If you enjoyed the sell out production of Mary Poppins last year, you will love this show even more.  The returning cast is more comfortable in their roles and really put forth the effort in song and dance to sell the show.  Tickets will go fast for this one so order early.
