“Floyd Collins” is an unusual musical that receives rare productions.  It gets a very proficient staging at Blank Canvas and is very well worth seeing due to strong musical performances and a nice interpretation of the melodramatic story.

Christine Howey

Without a firm sense of Floyd’s adoration of the cave world and all its mysteries, we aren’t able to fully appreciate his ironic predicament. As “The Ballad of Floyd Collins” says, with admirable brevity: “He went looking for his fortune underground/Sure enough, his fortune is what he found.”

Mark Horning
While an unusual choice for the holiday season, Cabaret none the less is the perfect choice for what has been an angry and highly contested political season that will take years to resolve if at all. The show illustrates the delicate balance of democracy and the effects that occur to everyday people when leaders are elected by what they say not by their political experience. It is a warning that all of America needs to heed.

Even if you are not a film buff, there are plenty of familiar references that are comfortable for the audience. Get to the theater early to watch the series of movie scenes flashing on the two TV screens and see how many you can guess the names of. It is an evening of romantic escapism much like the films being represented during the show. This is a nice date night play to share with someone you love or simply wish to know better.

SILENCE! THE MUSICAL is a typical Blank Canvas escapist musical comedy which will entertain the cult audience which the theatre has developed. Ciamacco knows his patrons and their tastes and has hit another home run with this script!

If a musical could be found criminally insane, "Silence! The Musical" would fit the bill at Blank Canvas Theatre.

The show is a delightfully disgusting spoof of the creepiest thriller of the early 1990s, the Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs. The unauthorized parody by Jon and Al Kaplan and Hunter Bell takes that dark, twisted story that goes inside the minds of serial killers and turns it on its ear in foul and funny ways that surprise at every turn.

You will find yourself nervously laughing at all the naughty bits in this musical send-up of the psycho/thriller classic. The musical is full of shock value that goes for the throat. It’s an embarrassingly delightful evening of farcical theater that will entertain those not afraid of things that go “F” in the night.

Glengarry Glen Ross was the first David Mamet play I ever saw.  Fortunately, it was on Broadway where each of the characters was so real that it was easy to react to each as a person, not a character in a play.  Unfortunately, this was not the case in the Blank Canvas production.  Too bad.  The script can be mesmerizing.

Taking a break from the offbeat musical that is Blank Canvas’s bread and butter, this show is a dramatic summertime treat that shows what truly engaging theater can do for the imagination.  While the theater is still quite warm it is worth a light discomfort to see a truly exemplary performance.

If watching decadence is your thing, you’ll probably be turned on by THE WILD PARTY.  If you prefer being in the presence of characters who have redeeming values so you can feel empathy, this is not going to be your show.  The cast, though some give surface level performances, generally display good singing voices and put out full effort.

Blank Canvas has prioritized silly over stylized for its production of "The 39 Steps" which, while playful and thoroughly entertaining, is pedestrian.

THE 39 STEPS is a farcical romp which gets a good, but not great production.  If your theater liking is for improbable plot twists, and extended ridiculousness, the Blank Canvas production makes for a chucklefest and should delight you.

In spite of over-zealous musical sounds, REEFER MADNESS is a farcical delight that is a tongue-in-cheek examination of the “dangers” of marijuana.  The production elements are aptly overdone, resulting in a fun experience for an open minded audience or one that is “toked” out.

If you have ever seen the ridiculous propaganda film from 1936 by the same name (and even if you haven’t) you really should see the Blank Canvas production of “Reefer Madness.”  It is a hilarious farcical send-up of the film with a driving rock score.  The cast is on a real high and you will be too.  This is the kind of show that will give you visions of sugar plums dancing in your head.
