hello WAIT UNTIL DARK @ GREAT LAKES THEATER - hub

Through March 12, 2017
(216) 664-6064

Bob Abelman

After its GLT run, the show will be moving to production partner Idaho Shakespeare Festival’s outdoor facility in May. Considering how late the sun sets there at that time of year, actually waiting until dark will be more of a stage direction than a title. And it just may provide the added suspense this play so sorely needs.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's blog here.

Roy Berko

Wait Until Dark continues the GLT tradition of producing a mystery as part of its season offerings.  Those who love murder mysteries may well be enthused, but both script and production do not reach the level of effectiveness of previous shows of this genre.

Think of this dated play as a glass of fine champagne that has been left out too long. It tastes the same but has lost all of its fizz. In spite of the best efforts of everyone involved they simply cannot return the original effervescent of when it was fresh and new.

Christine Howey

In this misbegotten production at Great Lakes Theater, there are virtually no thrills and a remarkable absence of chills.

Laura Kennelly

Feeling helpless? Imagine the plight of Susy Hendrix, blind and trapped in a room with a murderous drug dealer. That’s just one plot turn in Wait Until Dark, an engaging thriller staged by Great Lakes Theater at PlayhouseSquare’s Hanna Theatre.

David Ritchey

Wait Until Dark has script problems that make it a strange choice for Great Lakes Theater. Even the movie, with the talented Audrey Hepburn, doesn't hold up well 50+ years later.

Andrea Simakis

The problems plaguing the Great Lakes Theater production of "Wait Until Dark" are baked into teh script that seems, well, blind to its own ridiculousness.

hello A CHRISTMAS CAROL @ GREAT LAKES THEATER - hub

Through December 23, 2016
(216) 664-6064

Bob Abelman

While “A Christmas Carol” can certainly seem like a stale old chestnut, this 28th anniversary production is a deep, oxygen-rich breath of winter-fresh air.

It was hard to hear the child actors, who didn’t project well, but the special effects were as fantastic as ever in this holiday classic, which stars Lynn Robert Berg as a new Ebenezer Scrooge after actor Aled Davies spent nearly a decade in the role.

hello TWELFTH NIGHT @ GREAT LAKES THEATER - hub

Through October 30, 2016
(216) 664-6064

Bob Abelman

Under Drew Barr's direction, Great Lakes’ exposes the dark underbelly of this romantic comedy.  This adds texture to the questions Shakespeare raises about love and desire, which makes for a truly intriguing evening of theater. But it plays havoc with the humor.

TWELFTH NIGHT, one of Shakespeare’s most produced comedies, gets a creative, energized production.  It should please both Shakespeare enthusiasts and novices as it is an easy to understand and comprehensible staging with lots of humor and farcical periods.

It is with good reason why Shakespeare’s works have withstood the test of time.  Through the use of universal themes it is theater that everyone can easily relate to.  This Great Lakes Theater production of “Twelfth Night” truly hits the funny bone with audience members still laughing as they depart.  Check this one out.

If you can get past some of the less than artful attempts at humor, this Twelfth Night has much to recommend it.

Though "Twelfth Night" is one of the Bard's most famous comedies, Dres Barr's gorgeous production at Great Lakes Theater embraces its tragic underpinnings, from the spectacular decay of the set to the Goth chic of the costumes.

hello MY FAIR LADY @ GREAT LAKES THEATER - hub

September 23 trhough October 29, 2016
(216) 664-6064

Bob Abelman

Shortly after the record-breaking, award-winning production of “My Fair Lady” opened on Broadway in 1956, playwright and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner remarked that “the right people at the right moment in their lives embarked on the right venture.”   The same can be said for Great Lakes Theater’s most remarkable rendition of “My Fair Lady.”

Victoria Bussert has staged a MY FAIR LADY that is as close to perfect as any musical can be. Everything about the production screams, “This is a special evening of theatre that has to be seen!”  If you only see one theatrical production this season, this is the show!  Bravo!!!

Perhaps Victoria Bussert’s big, broad direction worked well in Idaho (on an outdoor amphitheater), but at the Hanna, it just comes across as too big and too broad. It seems to be missing a lot of intimate moments that might have elevated the show above what has been done time and time again in dinner theater and summer stock.

At least there’s one regular Great Lakes Theater cast member — Laura Perrotta — who is so effective as Higgins’ knowing mother, it briefly elevates everything to much fairer “My Fair Lady.”

Mark Horning

No matter how many times you have seen the movie or the Broadway musical or touring performances, Great Lakes Theater’s production of “My Fair Lady” should not be missed.  It is a perfect rendition of “the perfect musical” and should not be missed.

My Fair Lady is a treasure and this production does it full justice.

I could have clapped all night.  What a glorious production of “My Fair Lady” this is.  Cleveland’s Great Lakes Theater Company, performing in the Hanna Theatre, offered a production worthy of Broadway.
