hello REPAIRING A NATION @ KARAMU THEATRE - hub

February 9 through 26, 2017
(216) 795-7070

Mark Horning
Strong personalities clash as this no-holds-barred battle of the wits and lips unfolds before the audience. No need to mike the actors as this cast carries their voices clear to the back of the theater. While sporting an intricate plot it is an entertaining work that combines American history with a dysfunctional family.

Under the direction of Margaret Ford-Taylor, the cast works hard for almost three hours to loom Salter’s threads of memory into a powerful whole. And while it doesn’t entirely succeed, the play is often compelling and instructive.

hello SISTER ACT @ KARAMU THEATRE - hub

Any production that can nearly fill the theater in mid-run on a snowy Sunday in Cleveland definitely has something good going for it. Put this show on your Christmas list and get your tickets before they are gone. This is a high energy, high spirited and very entertaining classic.

Director Sheffia Randall Dooley handles the traffic well in this complex production with a large cast. Once the performers settle in and keep the pacing tight, a lot of the jokes will land with more snap. And if the start of the show finds a way to get a charge of adrenaline it will be, well, a godsend.

hello RASHEEDA SPEAKING @ KARAMU THEATRE - hub

November 4 through 20, 2016
(216) 795-7070

Roy Berko

The play has lots of laughs and some intriguing situations, but RASHEEDA SPEAKING proves that fine acting and good directing cannot always cover up for a rudderless script.

This play is a complex examination of the still lingering silent (and at times not so silent) prejudices that still haunt our nation. While not attempting to solve the issue it gives voice to the situation which in turn may open up dialog between various elements of our society…topical, socially relevant and well worth seeing.

There’s a sharp, funny and often startling script laying inside Rasheeda Speaking, but its voice is dimmed by the playwright’s tendency to overstate things that have already been said.

hello DETROIT '67 @ KARAMU HOUSE - hub

February 5 through 28, 2016
216-795-707)

Roy Berko

DETROIT ’67 lacks the plot and writing dynamics that make for great plays. It gets a better production at Karamu than the script probably is due.  For this, the director and cast get a great deal of credit.

Although not the strongest of scripts, it is what the cast and crew does with the material that makes this gritty tale of love and friendship conquering all adversity so compelling to watch.  You find yourself being swept along with the story.  This show should have a full house at each performance.

There are two crises at work in Detroit ’67 by Dominique Morisseau, now at Karamu House. But the interplay between the two events—one personal and one community-wide— doesn’t exactly benefit either one. In fact, they actually minimize each other, which is clearly not the intent.
